Seconds To Midnight

Seconds To Midnight is an immersive political rave experience designed to pay homage to the value of international rave culture throughout political history by criticizing the desensitization of the 24hr news cycle in modern society.Reconnect with yourself, your community, and the world around you as you dance, release political tensions, and renew your energy to continue fighting against global injustice.

This isn't just a party - This is a statement.

This is contemporary art.

Viewer discretion is advised:
Seconds to Midnight contains use of strobe lights, fog, loud noises, and content which may be uncomfortable for some viewers.

The Music

The “Main Event” will feature original Euro-trance & techno inspired music specially composed by artist Matthew Samms for this event.
These tracks combine a classic EDM build with natural environmental sounds and quoted audio clips from significant historic and political events.
The “After Party” begins just after midnight, where we will be switching to a collection of EDM classics, modern dance hits, and all time favorites to keep you in the moment all night long.

How is this different from a typical rave?

The Experience

Not only will Seconds To Midnight be packed with all the essential rave elements, including strobe effects, blacklights, haze, and loud music - but the space will also be transformed to include multiple installation pieces to heighten our theme and your immersion in the space.Whether it be by reflecting on yourself in our wall mirrors, reflecting on the world by watching the video events playing on display screens, or counting the seconds ticking down as they are projected above the dance floor, you will have the opportunity to engage with the event from every corner of the space.

Please maintain your well-being as a priority

Accessibility

While this event is intended to welcome everyone, we understand it may not be suitable for those who are photosensitive or experience epilepsy and other medical conditions. We will have earplugs available for those who may be more comfortable with a quieter experience.
We will also have some sunglasses to lend out to those who would like to dampen the strong lighting effects.
As our supplies are limited, we encourage attendees who anticipate needing such forms of accommodation to bring with them the supplies that make them most comfortable in this setting.

Seconds To Midnight expects all attendees to embrace the global culture we are representing.
There a few key things to consider before attending:

P.L.U.R.

Peace, Love, Unity, Respect.
The modern slogan of rave culture, especially in North America.
Please centre kindness and respect in how you engage with yourself, others, and the space while attending our event. That also means stop judging and start living!

Consent

People in attendance Are looking to let go and dance - Give them, and yourself, space to do so. A smile, wave, or silly dance move is just as effective as touch to get the attention of a new friend.Make sure you've gotten clear and enthusiastic consent before inserting yourself into someone's space so everyone can continue to enjoy the event without worry. Most importantly, don't be offended if they decline!

Longevity

Seconds To Midnight is meant to be an unforgettable refueling opportunity before continuing to move forward and challenge global oppression.Use your newfound energy to perpetuate positive movements for peace, equality, and sustainability. Seek out protests, petitions, and charitable causes you can advocate for, that effect real change.Stay alert to disinformation, propaganda, and dangerous ideology not only in global news sources, but in conversations you may have in your day to day.

Why is this important?

The Purpose

Historically raves and underground dance events have been inseparable from major political events, providing space for counter culture to bloom against oppressive regimes around the world. From celebrations taking place on top of the crumbling remains of the Berlin Wall at the fall of the Soviet block, to rebellion during the underground dance clubs of Japan during the country's strict “Dance Ban”, then again among the thriving nightlife of Queer individuals across the world during the Aid's Crisis - inspiring Dan Savage to be quoted years later saying “During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night, and it was the dance that kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for.”Today, war torn areas in countries such as Ukraine, host ‘Clean Up Raves’, to inspire the young adults tasked with clearing debris away from buildings destroyed in bombings. Canadian rave festivals teach environmental protection, taking place in vast natural areas, preaching the art of leaving no trace and embracing indigenous ideology around caring for the land. European underground scenes practice the art of consent, kindness, and respect in a way unknown in the average North American bar. Protestors take to the streets, blasting music to encourage their peers to stay alert, or create their own rhythmic sounds by chanting their demands. While for the first time ever, the Bulletin of Scientists have declared the Doomsday clock has hit less than 90 seconds to midnight - a number so low it beats the record set at the clock's inception in 1947.We the people have long since been desensitized to the horrors of our world, shutting down, ignoring warning signs, having our energy stolen before we can put up a fight. We have been robbed of joy by the overwhelming amount of news updates and graphic media delivered to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have surpassed a life of 5 O'clock news. We live in a dystopian nightmare where sensationalism has created a system that exposes us to nonstop tragedy as a form of oppression.

We are no better for our supposed awareness.
We are numb.
We need to reset if we are to progress.

Having fun has become its own form of rebellion against the regime infecting our every way of life, because it is the fun which empowers us to continue onwards. So we ask you, as the clock counts down closer and closer to doomsday and a world yet to be known...
